Editorial guide by our team
Val Gardena is the quintessential Dolomite destination: authentic Ladin culture, state-of-the-art lift infrastructure, a direct gateway to the Sella Ronda circuit and a World Cup downhill piste that ranks among the most technically exacting on the entire circuit. Those who come once rarely fail to return.
Three Ladin Villages
Val Gardena is not a single resort but a community of three distinct municipalities, each with its own personality. Ortisei — St. Ulrich in German — is the valley capital, the lowest and most animated, carrying a centuries-old tradition of woodcarving and craftsmanship. Santa Cristina — St. Christina — occupies the middle position and serves as the base for the lifts to Ciampinoi and the Saslong. Selva di Val Gardena — Wolkenstein — sits highest, most frequented by international skiers and the natural starting point for the Sella Ronda. The Ladin language is woven into daily life: road signs, restaurant menus and bar conversations flow interchangeably between Ladin, German and Italian in a linguistic balance that is itself part of the valley’s identity.
The Saslong Piste
Every December Santa Cristina transforms: the Saslong — a Ladin name that simply means “the long one” — hosts the men’s World Cup downhill, one of the most anticipated events on the entire White Circus calendar. The vertical drop is formidable: 1,113 metres from the starting gate at Ciampinoi to the valley finish, along a course that alternates fast flat sections with technical walls that separate the great from the very good. Outside race weeks the Saslong remains open to expert recreational skiers, and tackling it — even without World Cup gates — gives a visceral sense of what descending at 140 kilometres per hour actually means.
The Seceda Cable Car
Val Gardena’s most famous visual is not a piste but a view: the summit of the Seceda gondola at 2,518 metres, looking across to the jagged Odle peaks rising from the snow like grey stone blades. That image — reproduced on millions of screens, postcards and mountain magazine covers — has become one of the defining visual icons of the Dolomites. The Seceda is not just a ski installation; it is a panoramic destination visited even by non-skiers, a natural terrace that justifies the journey on its own terms.
The Sella Ronda
Selva is one of four entry points to the Sella Ronda, the legendary circuit around the Sella massif via the four Dolomite passes — Gardena, Sella, Pordoi and Campolongo — which can be completed in a single skiing day in either direction. The Ciampinoi installation links the valley floor directly into the circuit, connecting Val Gardena with Alta Badia to the east and with the Passo Sella towards Val di Fassa to the south. For those who want to explore the Dolomiti Superski system in its fullest form, Selva is the ideal base.
Getting There
From Bolzano take the A22 motorway, exit at Bolzano Sud, then drive the SS242 up into the valley, roughly 40 minutes. From Trento the natural route crosses the Passo Sella. From Munich the direct route follows the A22 via the Brenner Pass, around three hours in normal conditions — which explains the strong and long-established German and Austrian presence the valley has always known.
