Piedmont’s Heartbeat of the Via Lattea
Sauze d’Oulx is the beating heart of the Via Lattea, Piedmont’s most extensive ski area and one of the largest in the entire Italian Alpine arc. Perched at 1,509 metres on the Italian side of the Cottian Alps, a few kilometres from the French border, the village has built over time a reputation that extends well beyond national boundaries: skiing here is practised on a grand scale, in an open and luminous landscape that in winter offers frequent sunny days thanks to the favourable aspect of the slopes.
The resort participates in the Via Lattea circuit alongside Sestriere, Sansicario, Cesana, Claviere and, across the border, Montgenevre in France. The 400 km of total pistes are accessible with a single integrated skipass, making the area one of the largest cross-border ski resorts in the Alps. In a single week it is practically impossible to ski everything: the sectors alternate in character, aspect and technical difficulty, offering variety enough to satisfy skiers of every level and style.
The “Balcony of the Alps”
Sauze d’Oulx’s nickname is not accidental. From many of its pistes and mountain huts an unusually wide panorama unfolds: the Grandes Rousses massif to the east, the Monte Chaberton with its characteristic summit military structures, and the whole frontier range between Italy and France extending northwards to Mont Blanc on the clearest days. It is a view that accompanies the skier throughout the descent, transforming even the most technically demanding days into something closer to an elevated scenic promenade.
The most frequented pistes develop above 2,000 metres, where snow tends to stay in good condition throughout the season. The Moncrons run and the descents towards the Sportinia plateau — a 1,800-metre bowl reachable by cable car — are among the most appreciated routes, suitable both for groups seeking long fluid runs and for technical skiers targeting the steep slopes of the Clotes sector.
International Atmosphere and Nightlife
Since the 1970s, Sauze d’Oulx has attracted British, Irish and Scandinavian skiers seeking an alternative to more formal Alpine resorts. This international vocation has shaped the village’s character: bars open late, live music pubs, and restaurants with multilingual menus are the norm rather than the exception. The nightlife is notoriously more vibrant than the Italian Alpine average, making Sauze a particularly popular destination for young groups and travellers who consider apres-ski an integral part of the holiday experience.
This does not mean that quieter alternatives are absent: the Piedmontese restaurant offer is solid, with fondue, Fassone beef and Piedmont wines that balance the livelier side of the resort well.
The Turin 2006 Olympics
Sauze d’Oulx played a role in Olympic history: during the Turin 2006 Games it hosted the ski freestyle events, specifically the moguls and aerials disciplines. The facilities built for the occasion left an infrastructural legacy that still benefits the resort today. For those who enjoy freestyle skiing or snowboarding, the Sauze d’Oulx parks are among the most developed in Piedmont.
Getting There
Access from Turin is direct and quick: the A32 Turin-Frejus motorway reaches Oulx in about an hour, from where you ascend by cable car or by the mountain road to the village in another 15 minutes. In total, from the city to the piste edge takes around 1 hour 15 minutes — a connection that makes Sauze d’Oulx viable even for day trips from Piedmont’s main cities. From Turin Caselle airport the transfer takes approximately 1 hour 30 minutes by car or private shuttle.
