The Southern Gateway to the Dolomites

San Martino di Castrozza occupies a privileged geographic position: it is the point where the southern Dolomites open towards the Trentino interior, in a sheltered bowl at 1,467 metres surrounded by vertical walls on three sides. Above the village, the Pale di San Martino group dominates the landscape with a form that has no equivalent in the Alps: not a series of isolated peaks but an almost horizontal rocky platform โ€” the Pale plateau, above 2,600 metres โ€” from which towers and pinnacles of pale limestone emerge, gleaming white in the winter sun.

This unique geological configuration makes San Martino one of the most photographed resorts in Italy. But the village is not merely scenery: it is a ski resort with an established tradition, visited by generations of Trentino, Veneto and Emilian families who return each winter with a loyalty typical of destinations that offer something beyond a simple service.

The Pale di San Martino and the Rosetta

The highest sector of the resort is the Rosetta, reachable by gondola that ascends directly from the village to 2,357 metres. From this point opens one of the most evocative panoramas in all the Dolomites: the Pale plateau extends as far as the eye can see to the north, while to the south the Val Cismon opens towards the Venetian plain fading at the horizon. The Cima Rosetta (2,743 m), with its chimneys and ridges, is in summer one of the most frequented alpine destinations in Trentino.

In winter the Rosetta sector offers the highest-quality snow in the entire resort: the north-facing aspect guarantees optimal preservation even during the sunniest weeks of February and March. The descents from the Rosetta towards the village, while not of extreme difficulty, require intermediate to advanced technique given the gradients and terrain variations.

The Resort: Variety and Quality

The 60 km of total pistes are distributed across two main basins. The Rosetta-Col Verde sector, the higher one, offers the longest and most panoramic runs. The Tognola sector, reachable by gondola from the hamlet of Siror, features gentler, sunnier slopes particularly suited to families and skiers refining their technique. The two sectors are linked by a connector run allowing movement without removing skis, though the traverse requires care in icy morning conditions.

Snowmaking covers critical sections, but snow quality is generally high thanks to the elevations and the predominantly north-facing aspect of the main sector.

Atmosphere and Character

San Martino has a distinct character compared to other Dolomite resorts of similar size. There is neither the glamour of Madonna di Campiglio nor the tourist density of Cortina, but there is something more intimate and personal: family-run hotels with three and four generations of managers, restaurants working with local producers, a measured evening animation that prefers good food to noisy nightlife. Prices โ€” accommodation, restaurants, skipass โ€” are on average lower than the luxury Dolomite resorts, while maintaining a high level of service.

Passo Rolle and the Foliage

A few kilometres from San Martino, the Passo Rolle (1,984 m) is one of the most photographed mountain passes in Italy. In winter the pass remains open to traffic but requires winter tyres or chains, and the snow covering the bare larch trees completes a landscape of great visual impact.

Getting There

From Trento the route via Primiero follows the SS50 for approximately 1 hour 45 minutes through Borgo Valsugana and Imer. From Venice take the A27 to Belluno, then continue via Feltre and Primiero in about 2 hours 30 minutes. From Bolzano the route via Passo Rolle and Val di Fiemme takes approximately 2 hours. The village has no rail service, but shuttles run from Trento station during winter weekends.
