Civetta and the Longest Wall in the Dolomites
Monte Civetta is one of the most imposing mountains in eastern Veneto: its north-west face extends almost four kilometres horizontally and rises 1,200 metres from base to summit, creating one of the largest vertical rock curtains in the entire Alpine arc. Climbers simply call it “the wall”, as if there were no other. In winter, with snow deposited on the ledges and cornices forming along the summit ridge, the visual spectacle from Alleghe and from the pistes is one that imprints itself permanently on the memory.
The ski resort that develops at the foot of this mountain takes its name from the peak but has its operational centre at Alleghe, a small village overlooking the lake of the same name. The 80 km of pistes, included in the Dolomiti Superski circuit, are distributed across authentic Dolomite terrain with the vertical relief and technical variety to suit a broad range of skiers.
Lago di Alleghe and Its History
Alleghe is one of the most photogenic villages in the Belluno Dolomites, partly thanks to the lake spread before it. The Lago di Alleghe is not a natural lake in the traditional sense: it formed in January 1771 when a massive landslide from Monte Piz dammed the course of the Cordevole river, creating a sheet of water that submerged the previous settlement. The remains of the old village still lie on the lake bed — a detail that lends the place a melancholic historical depth, amplified by the reflection of the Civetta on the water’s surface on still days.
In winter the lake partially freezes, and the walk along the bank with the flood-lit pistes in the evening background is one of the finest experiences the resort offers beyond skiing itself.
Authentic Skiing Without the Crowds
Civetta is part of Dolomiti Superski and shares its skipass with Alta Badia, Val Gardena, Cortina and the other resorts in the consortium. But unlike the busiest poles in the circuit, it maintains a decidedly quieter profile: lift queues are rare even at the height of season, the mountain huts require no obligatory reservation, and the density of skiers on the pistes allows freedom of movement that is hard to find elsewhere.
This does not mean the resort lacks technical interest. Some of the black pistes in the Alleghe sector — particularly the runs that drop steeply towards the valley floors — are demanding and require solid technique. The Dolomite terrain, with its irregularities and the variations in gradient typical of these mountains, rewards a clean and adaptable skiing style.
Pistes and Off-Piste
The difficulty distribution is well balanced: plentiful blue pistes for beginners and families, a good number of reds for intermediate skiers wanting to cover kilometres, and several technical blacks concentrated in the highest sector. On days following heavy snowfall, tree skiing — especially in the Col dei Baldi and Piani di Pezze sectors — offers interesting opportunities for expert skiers who enjoy fresh ungroomed powder.
Snowmaking covers the valley-floor sections and the most critical connections, guaranteeing continuity even in years with below-average snowfall.
Getting There
From Belluno the route follows the SS203 and SS203dir for approximately one hour, ascending the Val Cordevole. From Venice take the A27 motorway to Belluno, then continue as above for a total of around two hours. From Cortina d’Ampezzo the SS48 reaches Alleghe in 45 minutes along the scenic Passo Falzarego road — a route requiring winter tyres or chains. From Bolzano the route via Passo Gardena and Arabba takes approximately two and a half hours.
