Funivia Sass Pordoi

The Sass Pordoi cable car makes the shortest vertical journey of any lift in the Dolomiti Superski area — just 202 metres — but delivers what may be the most extraordinary view. The summit plateau of Sass Pordoi at 3,152 metres is one of the Dolomites’ most remarkable features: a nearly flat tabletop of rock and glacial debris, exposed on all sides, that functions as a natural panoramic terrace offering a 360-degree view across the entire Dolomite chain.

From this summit, the scale of the Dolomites becomes comprehensible in a single glance: the Marmolada glacier to the southeast, the Sella massif filling the north horizon, the Civetta and Pelmo groups to the west, and the Livinallongo valley dropping away below. It is one of the finest viewpoints in the entire Alpine arc and can be reached in minutes from Passo Pordoi at 2,950 metres, one of the most scenic mountain passes in Italy and a legendary location in cycling history as one of the most frequent Cima Coppi climbs of the Giro d’Italia.

The original cable car dates from 1947 and has been updated over the decades. It serves not only as a tourist attraction but as the access point for ski mountaineering routes toward the higher peaks of the Sella group, as well as for the Via Ferrata paths that make the Sella massif accessible to equipped hikers in summer. The summit has no pistes — the terrain is primarily a walking and photography destination — but the Passo Pordoi below is a central hub in the Sellaronda and Dolomiti Superski circuit, making this one of the most visited points in the entire Dolomite ski system.
