Kronplatz (Plan de Corones in Italian and Ladin) is one of South Tyrolโs top ski resorts: 119 km of slopes, a unique single-mountain layout converging on the 2,275 m summit, and the LUMEN Museum of Mountain Photography as a cultural landmark at the top. The resort is accessed from several surrounding villages, each with its own character.
The Resort Structure
Unlike many Alpine resorts built around a single village, Kronplatz is a mountain accessible from multiple directions:
- Bruneck/Brunico (835 m): the main town, cultural capital of the Puster Valley
- Riscone/Reischach (960 m): the ski-focused hamlet with direct gondola access
- St. Vigil/San Vigilio (1,201 m): on the southern side, quieter access
- Olang/Valdaora (1,050 m): eastern access, quieter and cheaper
- Percha/Perca (905 m): western access
Brunico/Bruneck: Town and Resort Combined
Brunico (German: Bruneck) is a genuine South Tyrolean town with 15,000 inhabitants, a medieval centre, excellent restaurants and a cultural life that continues regardless of the snow. Staying in Brunico gives you a more authentic experience than a purpose-built ski village.
From Brunico to the slopes: the Kronplatz gondola departs from Riscone, 3 km from the town centre. A free shuttle connects them throughout the day.
Brunico prices (high season):
- 4-star hotels: 130-240 euros per room
- 3-star: 90-150 euros per room
- Guesthouses: 70-100 euros per person
Riscone/Reischach: Directly at the Lifts
Riscone is the most convenient base for skiers: the gondola departs right from the village. It is smaller and less characterful than Brunico but saves 10-15 minutes each morning.
Riscone prices (high season):
- 4-star: 150-280 euros per room
- 3-star: 100-170 euros per room
Top hotels in Riscone:
Stroblhof Active Family Spa Resort: outstanding family hotel with extensive childrenโs facilities, indoor pool and excellent food. From 200 euros.
Hotel Kronplatz: right beside the gondola, modern and comfortable. From 160 euros.
Budget Options: Olang and Percha
The villages of Olang and Percha on the eastern and western flanks offer accommodation at 20-35% below Riscone prices. Both have their own gondola access to the summit. The quieter approach means less crowded morning lifts.
The LUMEN Museum
At the Kronplatz summit (accessible by gondola without skiing), the LUMEN Museum of Mountain Photography is a remarkable cultural addition to the resort experience. Open during the ski season, it houses an extraordinary collection of Alpine photography spanning over a century.
Getting to Kronplatz
- By car: A22 Brenner motorway, exit Brunico. 45 minutes from Bolzano, 2 hours from Innsbruck, 3.5 hours from Verona.
- By train: Brunico has a station on the Puster Valley line (connections from Fortezza/Franzensfeste)
- By plane: Innsbruck airport (1.5 hours), Munich (2.5 hours)
When to Book
Kronplatz attracts mainly German, Austrian and South Tyrolean skiers who book the Christmas and New Year period early. International visitors typically find easier availability than at Cortina or Courmayeur, but January and February weeks still fill up. Book at least 2-3 months ahead for peak periods.
