Choosing Your Base

For the Sella Ronda: The Four Valleys

The Sella Ronda is the most famous circuit in Dolomiti Superski: a 26 km loop on skis around the Sella massif passing through Val Gardena, Alta Badia, Val di Fassa and Arabba. The best bases for skiing the Sella Ronda are in these four valleys.

Best Sella Ronda bases:

ValleyIdeal baseHigh season avgSella Ronda access
Val GardenaSelva di Val Gardena160-280 eurosDirect (Passo Sella)
Alta BadiaCorvara180-320 eurosDirect (Passo Campolongo)
Val di FassaCanazei140-240 eurosDirect (Passo Pordoi)
ArabbaArabba100-200 eurosDirect (Passo Campolongo)

The anti-clockwise Sella Ronda (preferred by most skiers) typically starts from Selva or Corvara. The full circuit takes a whole day and requires an intermediate to advanced level.

Val Gardena: The Classic Gateway

Val Gardena (Ortisei, Santa Cristina, Selva) is one of the main hubs of Dolomiti Superski, with 175 km of its own slopes and direct connection to the Sella Ronda. The resort suits all levels.

Selva di Val Gardena is the best base for Sella Ronda skiers: the Ciampinoi gondola and Col Raiser cable car connect directly to the main circuit. Hotels range from simple guesthouses to luxury five-stars.

Alta Badia: Top of the Range

Alta Badia (Corvara, La Villa, San Cassiano, Badia) is the most refined of the Dolomiti Superski resorts, with excellent gastronomy including the three-Michelin-star St. Hubertus in San Cassiano. Prices are the highest in the circuit.

Budget Alternatives

For value-conscious skiers, consider:

  • Arabba: access to both the Sella Ronda and the Marmolada glacier at lower prices
  • Val di Fassa lower villages: Pozza, Vigo di Fassa offer good value with buses to the lifts
  • Civetta: Alleghe has some of the cheapest accommodation in the whole circuit

Booking Tips

  • Book Christmas and Carnival at least four to six months ahead
  • Mid-January and early March offer the best price-to-snow conditions
  • Many hotels offer discounts for stays of seven nights or more
  • Look for deals that include a Dolomiti Superski pass in the rate
