Hotels in Cervinia and Zermatt: Where to Stay for the Matterhorn Ski Area

Best hotels in Cervinia and Zermatt for skiing the cross-border Matterhorn area: prices, top picks and how to choose between the Italian and Swiss sides.

Redazione Funivie.it 4 febbraio 2026 3 min di lettura

Breuil-Cervinia and Zermatt together form one of the most spectacular skiing areas in the world: 360 km of marked runs, the iconic Matterhorn as backdrop and the possibility of skiing between Italy and Switzerland on a single pass. The choice of where to stay on the Italian or Swiss side has significant implications for experience and budget.

Cervinia (Italian Side): Better Value

Breuil-Cervinia sits at 2,006 m, making it one of the highest resort villages in the Alps. The altitude guarantees exceptional snow conditions from November to May, and the glacier at 3,480 m allows summer skiing.

The Cervinia Advantage

  • Significantly lower prices than Zermatt (50-70% less for equivalent quality)
  • Direct lift access to the glacier and the Swiss border
  • Italian food and atmosphere
  • Less crowded slopes on weekdays
  • Many hotels offer ski-in ski-out access

Cervinia hotel prices (high season):

CategoryPer room per night
5-star (Hermitage)400-700 euros
4-star superior200-350 euros
4-star standard150-260 euros
3-star100-170 euros

Top Hotels in Cervinia

Hotel Hermitage: the finest address in Cervinia, with ski-in ski-out access, indoor pool and one of the best restaurants on the Italian side. From 400 euros.

Hotel Excelsior Planet: luxury with a more contemporary design, excellent spa and mountain views. From 300 euros.

Hotel Bucaneve: reliable mid-range option in the centre, family-run with good food. From 150 euros.

Zermatt (Swiss Side): Premium Experience

Zermatt is car-free, reached by mountain railway from Tasch (where you leave your car). It is one of the most famous ski resorts in the world and prices reflect this.

The Zermatt Advantage

  • More extensive beginner and intermediate terrain
  • The Zermatt village atmosphere and evening life
  • Swiss precision in lift operations and hospitality
  • Access to the Klein Matterhorn (3,883 m): the highest lift-accessed point in the Alps

Zermatt prices (high season):

  • Budget accommodation: from 200-250 euros per person
  • Mid-range hotels: 300-500 euros per room
  • Luxury properties: 500-1,200 euros per room

The Swiss franc adds an additional premium: restaurant meals and ski passes cost significantly more on the Swiss side.

The Cross-Border Pass

The Zermatt/Matterhorn ski pass covers both sides (Italy + Switzerland) and is one of the most expensive ski passes in the Alps. For 2025-2026:

  • Day pass: approximately 95-110 euros
  • 6-day pass: approximately 500-560 euros

Cervinia-only passes are considerably cheaper (around 55-65 euros per day) and still provide access to excellent high-altitude terrain up to the Klein Matterhorn gondola.

Staying in Cervinia with Zermatt Day Trips

The optimal strategy for value-conscious skiers:

  1. Base yourself in Cervinia (significantly cheaper)
  2. Purchase the Cervinia-only pass for most days
  3. Upgrade to the full Matterhorn pass for one or two days to explore Zermatt
  4. Take the ski-through connection: ski from Cervinia through Plateau Rosa to Zermatt and return

This approach gives you the best of both worlds without the full Zermatt premium on accommodation.

Getting to Cervinia

  • By car: A5 motorway to Chatillon, then SP46 up the Valtournenche valley (1.5 hours from Aosta, 2.5 hours from Turin)
  • Limited parking: Cervinia has controlled access; arrive early or use the lower car parks with shuttle service
  • By plane: Turin airport (2 hours), Geneva (2.5 hours)
