Bormio is a ski destination with a millennial history: its medieval historic centre dates to the Middle Ages, the thermal baths have been active for centuries and the Stelvio run is one of the most famous Olympic downhill courses in Europe. For the 2025-2026 season, Bormio hosts the men’s downhill events of the Milan-Cortina Olympics.
Historic Centre: Upper Bormio
The heart of Bormio is a medieval gem with cobbled lanes, arcaded streets and historic palaces. Hotels in the historic centre offer an authentic experience, a few minutes’ walk from the gondola that climbs towards the slopes. The area is pedestrianised and highly atmospheric, especially in the evening.
Advantages of the historic centre:
- Unique atmosphere, well-preserved medieval architecture
- Typical Valtellina restaurants at reasonable prices
- Shops, boutiques and all services
- 5-10 minutes’ walk to the gondola station
- Close to the Bagni Vecchi and Bagni Nuovi thermal spas
Disadvantages:
- Traffic at peak times
- Limited and expensive parking
- High prices in peak season
Prices in the historic centre:
| Category | High season | Mid season | Low season |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4-star | 160-280 euros | 100-180 euros | 80-130 euros |
| 3-star | 100-170 euros | 70-120 euros | 55-85 euros |
| Guesthouses | 70-110 euros | 50-80 euros | 40-60 euros |
Zona Impianti (Lift Zone)
The area around the main gondola station (Bormio 2000) is the most convenient for skiers: slope access is direct and you save 10-15 minutes each morning. Hotels here tend to be more modern and ski-focused.
Recommended properties in the lift zone:
- Hotel Giallo (4-star): closest hotel to the gondola, ski storage at the door
- Park Hotel Bormio (4-star): panoramic views, shuttle included
- Several apartment complexes with weekly ski-in convenience
Valfurva: The Quiet Alternative
The Valfurva valley, 10 km from central Bormio, includes the village of Santa Caterina Valfurva (famous for its own Coppa del Mondo downhill course). Accommodation here is significantly cheaper (30-40% below Bormio) and the valley is exceptionally beautiful.
A free shuttle connects Valfurva to the main Bormio lifts approximately every 30 minutes.
The Thermal Spas: A Unique Asset
Bormio’s thermal baths are a major draw alongside the skiing. The spa complex divides into:
- Bagni Nuovi (3 km from centre): historic spa complex with art nouveau architecture, high-end
- Bagni Vecchi (2 km): the original Roman-era thermal baths cut into the cliff face, atmospheric
- Qc Terme Bormio (in town): modern urban wellness centre, more accessible pricing
Many hotels offer thermal spa packages. Combined ski and spa stays are a Bormio signature experience that sets it apart from purely ski-focused resorts.
Olympic Period (February 2026)
During the downhill and Super-G events, Bormio becomes a festive open-air venue. The finish area in the town centre hosts thousands of spectators and the atmosphere rivals the World Cup events that have been held here for decades. Book race-day accommodation months in advance; prices are 50-80% above normal high-season rates.
