Choosing the right skis is one of the most important decisions a skier makes. Skis that are too long or too stiff turn a day of fun into a struggle; unsuitable skis limit technical progress. This guide helps you navigate the many options available.
The key parameters
Length
Ski length depends primarily on your height, weight and level:
| Level | Skier height | Recommended length |
|---|---|---|
| Beginner | Any | Height minus 15/20 cm |
| Intermediate | Any | Height minus 5/10 cm |
| Advanced (piste) | Any | Height or slightly shorter |
| Expert (freeride) | Any | Height plus 5/10 cm |
Practical rule: stand the ski vertically next to you. For a beginner, the tip should reach between your chin and nose. For an expert, between your forehead and the top of your head.
Waist width
Waist width is the parameter that most defines the type of ski:
| Width | Type | Ideal use |
|---|---|---|
| 65-75 mm | Piste / Race | Carving on groomed runs |
| 75-90 mm | All-mountain piste | Piste with occasional off-piste |
| 90-105 mm | Versatile all-mountain | 50% piste, 50% off-piste |
| 105-120 mm | Freeride | Predominantly off-piste |
| Over 120 mm | Powder | Deep snow |
Turn radius (sidecut)
The turn radius determines how easily the ski turns:
- Under 14 m: tight turns, reactive. Ideal for slalom and fast turns
- 14-18 m: versatile, a good compromise
- Over 18 m: wide turns, stable at high speed. For giant slalom and freeride
Flex (stiffness)
| Flex | Characteristic | For whom |
|---|---|---|
| Soft (1-4) | Easy to flex, forgiving | Beginners, lighter weight |
| Medium (5-7) | Balanced comfort and performance | Intermediate, all-mountain |
| Stiff (8-10) | Precise, stable at high speed | Experts, racing |
Categories of skis
Piste skis (carving)
For those who ski predominantly on groomed runs:
- Width: 65-80 mm
- Profile: traditional camber (inverted U curvature)
- Radius: 12-16 m
- Most reactive on ice and firm snow
All-mountain skis
The best-selling category, for those wanting a versatile ski:
- Width: 80-100 mm
- Profile: rocker at tip + camber underfoot
- Radius: 16-20 m
- Work well everywhere: piste, light off-piste, soft snow
Freeride skis
For off-piste and deep snow:
- Width: 100-130 mm
- Profile: pronounced rocker at tip and tail
- Radius: over 20 m
- Float in fresh snow but less precise on piste

Touring skis (ski mountaineering)
For climbing with skins and descending off-piste:
- Width: 85-105 mm
- Weight: lightweight (800-1,200 g per ski)
- Binding: specific touring binding with releasable heel piece
- Compromise between light weight on the ascent and performance on the descent
How to choose by level
Beginner (0-20 ski days)
- Type: soft all-mountain
- Width: 75-85 mm
- Length: height minus 15 cm
- Flex: soft (3-5)
- Budget: rental recommended (25-40 EUR/day)
Tip: do not buy immediately. Rent for the first 10-15 days, then buy once you know what you enjoy.
Intermediate (20-50 days)
- Type: all-mountain or piste
- Width: 78-95 mm
- Length: height minus 5/10 cm
- Flex: medium (5-7)
- Budget: 400-700 EUR (skis + bindings)
Advanced / Expert (50+ days)
At this level you already know what you want. Consider owning 2 pairs:
- Narrow piste skis (68-78 mm) for carving days
- All-mountain/freeride skis (90-110 mm) for fresh snow days
Budget: 600-1,200 EUR per pair
Boots: more important than skis
A secret many beginners overlook: the boot is more important than the ski. A boot that hurts or is too wide makes it impossible to ski well, regardless of the skis.
How to choose boots
- Always try in a shop: do not buy online without trying
- The right fit: your foot should touch the toe with knees straight, but slide back slightly when you bend your knees
- Boot flex: 60-80 for beginners, 90-110 for intermediates, 120+ for experts
- Bootfitting: a good shop will provide a custom thermal moulding
Rental vs purchase
| Criterion | Rental | Purchase |
|---|---|---|
| Fewer than 5 ski days/year | Recommended | Not worthwhile |
| 5-10 ski days/year | Valid | Starting to pay off |
| More than 10 ski days/year | Too expensive | Worth it |
| Beginner level | Try different skis | Wait |
| Intermediate level and above | Limited | Choose your own ski |
