A Liberty Village at the Foot of the Snows
Ponte di Legno stands at 1,258 metres in the heart of the Val Camonica, on the border between the province of Brescia and Trentino, at a point where the valley narrows before opening towards the Passo del Tonale. The village is unlike many Alpine ski resorts: its historic centre presents Liberty-style buildings and early twentieth-century decorated facades that testify to a period of prosperity linked to spa and mountain tourism at the turn of the century. Walking through the village centre after a day on the slopes, past frescoed facades and granite portals, is an experience few Italian ski resorts can replicate with comparable authenticity. This combination of historic architecture and modern ski infrastructure is perhaps the most immediate distinguishing feature of Ponte di Legno compared to resorts built from scratch in the postwar period.
The Combined Pontedilegno-Tonale Resort
Ponte di Legno is not an isolated resort but the gateway to a ski system that extends to the Passo Tonale at 1,884 metres and, from there, reaches the Presena Glacier at 3,016 metres. This connection transforms the offering entirely: the 100 km of pistes on the Brescia side combine with the Tonale and glacier lifts to form one of the most extensive ski systems in Lombardy, with an altitudinal range from the Ponte di Legno valley floor to the permanent snows of the Presena. The Presena Glacier is one of the rarest cases in Italy of public summer glacier skiing: in June and July, when Alpine resorts lower their shutters, the Presena still offers compact snow on well-prepared slopes โ a niche destination for athletes in summer preparation and for those who cannot leave their skis at home even out of season.
Elevations and Snow
The altitudinal range of the resort, with elevations from 1,258 metres to 3,000 metres on the Presena, guarantees generally reliable snow conditions from December through to April and beyond. The north-facing slopes, particularly those descending from the Corno dโAola towards Ponte di Legno, hold snow in excellent condition for weeks after the last snowfall. The pistes offer notable technical variety: from demanding black runs on the Ponte di Legno sector suited to expert skiers, to the long reds of the Tonale that lend themselves to relaxed skiing sessions with children and beginners.
Val Camonica and the UNESCO Heritage
The valley hosting Ponte di Legno is far more than a ski access route: the Val Camonica is one of Italyโs most extraordinary UNESCO sites, with over ten thousand prehistoric rock carvings concentrated primarily around Capo di Ponte, approximately seventy kilometres down the valley from Ponte di Legno. The carvings, dated from the Mesolithic to the Iron Age, represent the largest corpus of prehistoric rock art in Europe. Combining a ski weekend at Ponte di Legno with a visit to the valleyโs rock engravings is one of those cultural pairings that transforms a ski holiday into a multi-dimensional experience difficult to replicate elsewhere.
Getting There
From Milan take the A4 to Brescia, then follow Val Camonica via SS42 and SS345 for approximately 100 km, with journey times around two and a half hours under normal traffic conditions. From Brescia the journey reduces to about one hour thirty. From Trentino you can approach via Trento, Madonna di Campiglio and the Passo Tonale, an alternative route that is particularly scenic.
