In-Depth

Editorial guide by our team

Madonna di Campiglio is the most exclusive winter resort in Trentino, set between the Brenta Dolomites and the Presanella massif at an altitude that guarantees quality snow throughout the season. It is more than a ski area: it is a brand, an identity, a benchmark for those who demand alpine excellence without compromise.

The Ski Area

With 150 kilometres of runs it forms part of the wider Skirama Dolomiti circuit, which links Campiglio with Folgarida and Marilleva to create one of the most extensive ski offerings in Trentino. The terrain favours intermediate and advanced skiers, with a mix of blue and red pistes immaculately groomed by a fleet of modern snowcats. Snowmaking covers the most altitude-sensitive sections, and the resortโ€™s vertical profile โ€” with summits approaching 2,500 metres โ€” delivers naturally excellent conditions from mid-December through to late April. Fifty-eight lift installations spread across the mountain eliminate queues in all but the busiest holiday weeks.

The 3Tre and the World Cup

Every December the 3Tre piste turns the global spotlight on the Brenta Dolomites: the menโ€™s FIS Alpine Ski World Cup night slalom is held here, broadcast worldwide. The name comes from the original race layout, which featured three closely spaced left turns that tested even veteran champions. Today the event is far more than a sporting competition. It is a social happening that draws international sports stars, global media and a well-heeled crowd that fills the centreโ€™s hotels. The atmosphere on race night โ€” lights, music, spectators packed against the safety fencing โ€” is unlike anything else in Alpine skiing and worth a trip to Campiglio in its own right.

Positioning and Clientele

Madonna di Campiglio is consciously positioned at the premium end. Prices are among the highest in Trentino, and the clientele reflects that choice: affluent families, Italian and international VIPs, and regular visitors to the great European resorts who choose Campiglio for its combination of service quality and discretion. The hotel offering ranges from traditional four-star properties to design boutique hotels that have comprehensively renewed the resortโ€™s face in recent years.

When to Go

The official season runs from December to April. Conditions are at their best between January and mid-March, when the snowpack is most stable and afternoon sun has not yet compromised piste quality during the central hours of the day. World Cup week in December is incomparable for atmosphere but prices peak accordingly; those with flexibility will find better value in January.

Getting There

From Trento the main connection follows the SS239, taking around eighty minutes in normal conditions. From Milan allow approximately three hours via the A22 motorway to Trento Nord. There is no direct rail link; the car remains the most practical option, though Trentino Trasporti runs shuttle buses from Trento during peak weeks.
