Livigno is a geographical and fiscal anomaly in the heart of the Lombard Alps: a customs-free zone in the upper Valtellina at 1,816 metres, where fuel, alcohol, tobacco and sports equipment are noticeably cheaper than in the rest of Italy and Europe. But reducing Livigno to its tax-haven status would be a mistake. The resort offers a first-rate ski area with some of the most reliable snow cover in the Italian Alps, and a sporting culture that earned it, rightly, a place at the centre of the 2026 Winter Olympics.
The 2026 Olympics
When Milan and Cortina secured the 2026 Winter Games, Livigno entered the programme as the venue for freestyle skiing and snowboard: halfpipe, big air, ski cross and snowboard cross events will bring the world’s best riders to this Valtellina valley. The Mottolino Snow Park, already ranked among the best in Europe before the Games, has been upgraded with Olympic-grade structures set to remain in operation for years afterwards. For Livigno’s community of roughly 6,000 residents, the Olympics represent an infrastructural and visibility boost that permanently raises the resort’s profile on the international alpine circuit.
The Ski Area
Livigno’s 115 kilometres of runs split across two clearly distinct slopes. The Mottolino on the valley’s east side is home to the resort’s main snow park and some of its steepest terrain, the natural territory of dynamic skiers and dedicated freestylers. Carosello 3000 on the western flank is broader and more family-oriented, with a progressive gradient of difficulty that allows less experienced skiers to build confidence at their own pace. The high altitude — topping out at 2,798 metres — guarantees excellent snow conditions throughout the season, often well into spring, making Livigno one of the Alps’ most dependable destinations for March and April holidays.
The Duty-Free Factor
Livigno’s customs-free status is not a folkloric detail. Every year, thousands of visitors organise their trip partly around the opportunity to buy technical gear, clothing and accessories at prices that can run 20 to 30 per cent below those in city shops. Dozens of specialist ski and snowboard stores line the village centre, many staffed by highly qualified technicians with ranges that rival trade fairs during peak weeks. Skiing in and leaving with a new pair of skis is not the exception here; it is the norm.
Getting There
Reaching Livigno requires a degree of planning. The main road through the Val di Livigno is subject to closures after heavy snowfall, particularly in December and January. The more reliable alternative is the toll tunnel beneath the Munt La Schera, which links Livigno with Zernez in the Swiss Engadine and stays open almost year-round. From Milan the drive takes around three and a half hours in normal conditions; from Bormio, Livigno’s Valtellina neighbour, it is just thirty minutes.
