A Resort That Crosses Borders
La Thuile occupies a privileged geographic position: it lies a few kilometres from the Colle del Piccolo San Bernardo, the pass that has connected the Aosta Valley with the French Savoy for centuries. This proximity to the border is not a historical curiosity but the concrete premise of a resort that develops across two countries: the Espace San Bernardo links La Thuile on the Italian side with La Rosiere on the French side, forming a system of 152 km of pistes skiable with a single international skipass. For those skiing the highest sectors, the border is marked only by a sign and a slight change in signage — the landscape remains the same, the snow remains the same, but the views open onto two different horizons.
Espace San Bernardo: Italy and France in One Day
The connection between La Thuile and La Rosiere runs through the highest elevations of the resort, crossing above 2,600 metres on the ridge traverses. The border crossing is formally active — in the event of a customs check you must carry a valid identity document — but in daily practice the sparse border guards make the frontier almost invisible. The descent from La Rosiere towards La Thuile, with its north-east orientation, is one of the most panoramic experiences in the entire western Alpine area: the altitude allows simultaneous views over the Mont Blanc massif, the Matterhorn, the Gran Paradiso and the ridges of the French Val d’Isere. On a clear day, no resort in the Aosta Valley offers a richer panoramic tableau.
Quality Snow and Competitive Prices
La Thuile has a well-established reputation for snow quality. The predominantly north-facing aspect of the Italian slopes, combined with sustained elevations, guarantees dry, compact snow conditions for most of the season from December through to mid-April in good years. This technical advantage, alongside skipass prices noticeably lower than the Aosta Valley’s most famous resorts such as Courmayeur and Cervinia, has built a loyal clientele over time: families, technical skiers and off-piste enthusiasts who prefer quality of experience on the mountain to the media profile of the destination.
The Women’s World Cup
Each year, typically in late January or early February, La Thuile hosts Women’s World Cup speed events — super-G and downhill. The La Thuile course is appreciated by competitors for its technical variety: the upper section is a high-altitude descent on compact ice with sustained gradients, while the lower section opens on a broader slope that showcases the tracking qualities of the speed specialists. For spectators, La Thuile’s races offer the opportunity to watch top-level competition in a still relatively accessible setting, without the overwhelming crowds of Kitzbuhel or Val Gardena.
Getting There
From Turin take the A5 motorway towards Aosta to the Morgex exit, then the SS26 and SR25 ascend to La Thuile for approximately 20 km. Total journey time from Turin is around one hour forty minutes. From Milan add approximately ninety minutes via the A4 to Turin. The Mont Blanc tunnel, reachable from Courmayeur about forty minutes from La Thuile, provides direct access from Chamonix and the whole of eastern France. Bus connections from Aosta operate throughout the ski season.
