In-Depth

Editorial guide by our team

Dolomiti Superski is not a ski resort in the conventional sense: it is Europeโ€™s largest ski consortium, a system that unites more than 1,200 kilometres of runs across twelve distinct areas under a single pass, connected by 450 lifts through some of the most beautiful mountains on earth. All of this within a landscape recognised as a UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site since 2009 โ€” the Dolomites, the alpine chain with no rivals worldwide for the form, colour and verticality of its rock towers.

The Member Areas

The Dolomiti Superski system brings together very different places, each with its own identity. Alta Badia (130 km) is the Ladin cultural heart of the consortium, with the Gran Risa as an established FIS World Cup venue and a mountain dining offer among the most refined in Italy. Val Gardena (175 km) hosts the legendary Saslong, another World Cup classic, and operates the most modern lift installations in the entire network. Val di Fassa-Carezza provides Sella Ronda access from the eastern flank, with the Catinaccio massif as its spectacular backdrop. Arabba-Marmolada is the choice for technical skiers: demanding black runs and the Marmolada glacier at 3,265 metres, the highest point in the consortium. Plan de Corones-Kronplatz surprises with its 360-degree summit panorama across three alpine chains โ€” the Dolomites, the Zillertal Alps and the Otztal Alps โ€” from a perfectly flat mountaintop. Alpe di Siusi-Seiser Alm, Europeโ€™s largest high-altitude plateau, is the kingdom of nordic skiing but also delivers fine alpine runs in a landscape unlike any other. Cortina dโ€™Ampezzo (120 km) brings its historic weight and Olympic legacy. The Civetta sector is less known to the mass market but offers exceptional skiing quality across 80 kilometres of some of the most panoramic pistes in the Dolomites. Rounding out the system are San Martino di Castrozza in the Trentino Dolomites, the Tre Valli Ladinies with their Ladin authenticity, Passo San Pellegrino-Falcade as a natural link with Val di Fassa, and the eastern Arabba sector.

The Sella Ronda

The Sella Ronda best encapsulates the Dolomiti Superski experience: a circular ski tour around the Sella massif via four historic passes โ€” Gardena, Sella, Pordoi and Campolongo โ€” completable in a single day by an intermediate-to-advanced skier. It works in both directions, with the clockwise route presenting generally more technical sections. The practical advice is to start early, around nine in the morning, to avoid the bottleneck at the Campolongo pass that can develop significantly on busy days. The Sella Ronda is essentially the reason many European skiers plan at least one week in the Dolomites over the course of their skiing lives.

Choosing Your Base

The right base depends on what you are looking for. Alta Badia combines a central position in the network, Ladin gastronomic culture and an atmosphere that suits those who want to ski well without sacrificing the table. Val Gardena answers for those who want the newest-generation lifts and a high standard of accommodation. Val di Fassa has historically been the most accessible in price terms while retaining a direct Sella Ronda connection. Arabba is the destination for technical skiers who put black runs first and prefer a less social environment.

The Ski Pass

The Dolomiti Superski is one of Italyโ€™s most expensive ski passes, an investment that justifies itself quickly given the enormous coverage. Available as a single day, multi-day or season ticket, it carries significant discounts for online advance purchase โ€” early-booking in November and early December can substantially reduce the daily cost. A week with the Dolomiti Superski is an experience that pays for itself in landscape quality, run variety and logistical ease that is genuinely difficult to replicate elsewhere in Europe.
