The Valley and Ladin Culture

Alta Badia lies in the valley of the same name between Val Gardena and Val Badia, in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Dolomites. It is more than a ski resort: it is a territory with a precise cultural identity, that of the Ladin community which has inhabited these valley floors for centuries. The municipalities of Corvara, La Villa, San Cassiano, Badia and La Val preserve a minority language โ€” Ladin โ€” alongside traditions, architecture and a refined mountain gastronomy unmatched in the Italian Alps.

At altitude this identity expresses itself through the internationally recognised Gourmet Skisafari, a format that brings Michelin-starred chefs and local specialty products directly onto the terraces of mountain refuges. Skiing in Alta Badia also means stopping at a restaurant at 2,000 metres not out of necessity, but as a deliberate, pleasurable choice.

The Slopes

The 130 certified kilometres offer considerable technical variety across several distinct sectors. The Gran Risa above La Villa is the most celebrated descent: steep, demanding and unforgiving of imprecision. Every December it hosts the menโ€™s FIS World Cup giant slalom, drawing tens of thousands of spectators onto the natural grandstands of the hillside. Seeing it in person is an experience avid skiing fans rarely forget.

The Piz La Ila sector, accessible from Corvara, delivers extraordinary panoramas across the Tofane and Sella group, with scenic routes accessible to intermediate skiers. Towards the west, the Armentarola piste descends through larches and snowbound meadows connecting San Cassiano to the valley floor in the direction of Cortina โ€” an itinerary alternating moderate gradients with long sweeping curves on open terrain.

The Sella Ronda Connection

Alta Badia is one of the four pillars of the Sella Ronda, the circuit that links the four Dolomite passes โ€” Gardena, Sella, Pordoi and Campolongo โ€” across four separate ski areas in a single day. The loop, doable clockwise or anti-clockwise, covers around 40 kilometres of runs and stands as one of the most scenically spectacular ski tours in the Alps. From Alta Badia, Val Gardena is to the north and Arabba and the Marmolada lie to the east via the Pordoi pass. The Dolomiti Superski pass โ€” of which Alta Badia is a constituent โ€” gives access to over 1,200 kilometres of runs across the Dolomite region.

Getting There

From Bolzano the most direct route runs through Val Gardena via Ortisei, around 60 kilometres in off-peak traffic. Alternatively, from Brunico you ascend the Val Badia passing through Corvara. The nearest airports are Venice Marco Polo and Innsbruck, both reachable in under three hours by car or transfer shuttle. The Dolomiti Bus service connects Alta Badia with major railway stations throughout the winter season.
