Funivia Lagazuoi

The Lagazuoi cable car is the most historically charged lift in the Dolomites. Departing from Passo Falzarego at 2,105 metres and arriving at the Rifugio Lagazuoi at 2,752 metres, it carries skiers and hikers to a summit that was the scene of some of the most intense and tragic combat of the First World War, when Italian and Austrian troops dug tunnels through the mountain itself and detonated massive underground mines in the attempt to dislodge each other from positions no more than metres apart.

Today the tunnels can be explored on foot: a guided visit through the galleries and observation posts carved into the Lagazuoi limestone is an unforgettable experience that puts the skiing into a very different historical perspective. The Rifugio Lagazuoi itself, perched on the summit with views across the Falzarego pass to the Pelmo and Civetta groups, is one of the finest mountain restaurants in the Dolomites and serves excellent traditional Ampezzano cuisine at 2,752 metres.

For skiers, the Lagazuoi is the launching point for the Armentarola, one of the most celebrated off-piste descents in Italy. This long, varied route through open terrain and forest drops toward the Armentarola valley and the Alta Badia resorts, covering several hundred metres of vertical in a wild glacial landscape. It is skiable by confident intermediate skiers in good conditions and represents one of those rare Alpine experiences that combines technical interest with genuine adventure and spectacular scenery. The cable car also forms an important link in the Dolomiti Superski circuit between the Cortina area and the Alta Badia domain.
